Madonna Garden Roses Botticelli's painting "Madonna of the Rose Garden" shows us the Virgin sitting under an arch, on a raised stone bench that resembles a throne.

The Virgin has her eyes barely open and she looks at her son with a certain sadness.

In her hand she is holding a pomegranate, the symbol of the Passion of Christ, a fruit that the Infant Jesus is holding with her.

While she is looking at him sadly, the Child is looking at her intensely, his eyes wide open.

One senses that he is determined, as if he were ready to face his destiny, a destiny that the Virgin clearly cannot accept.

The Infant Jesus is sitting on the Virgin's thigh with his arm around him to hold him in place.
