“The Virgin and Child in the Glory of Seraphim” by Botticelli at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence
Botticelli (1445-1510) “The Virgin and Child in a Glory of Seraphim”
Painting - Oil on Wood (120 x 65 cm) 1470
Madonna Enthroned with Seraphim In this painting by Botticelli, created in 1470, the Virgin is illuminated by the golden rays emanating from the mandorla that surrounds her, formed by a garland of seraphs.
This mandorla has given its name to the work, the Virgin in Glory.
The mandorla, which emanates from the Virgin, occupies the entire height of the painting.
We see the golden rays illuminating the scene all the way to the bottom of the painting, and we can also see the head of a seraphim under one of the Virgin's feet.
The gentle gaze of Mary rests on her Child, whom she holds in her arms.
The Child Jesus, his gaze lost in the distance, blesses us with one hand.
The beauty of this painting by Botticelli lies both in the poses of the figures, but also in the simplicity of the scene, which finds all its evocative power there.
The Virgin and Child Jesus are depicted “outside of time”: they are the intermediary between us and the sacred.
