The Boboli Garden at the Palazzo Pitti Medici in Florence

The island of the Boboli Gardens In the early 16th century, on the grounds of the place known as Boboli, located across from the Pitti Palace and what was then named the Orto dei Pitti, the Pitti vegetable garden, there were some farms and vines were mainly grown.

When Cosimo I de' Medici's wife, Eleonora of Toledo, bought the Pitti palace to make it the family palace, she decided to turn the Orto dei Pitti into a garden.

This new Pitti garden was later enlarged by including the terrains of the locality of Boboli that adjoined it, and the whole then took the name of Boboli garden.

The large grotto in the Boboli Gardens In this garden, it was also decided to incorporate artificial grottoes, including the famous large grotto, a decision linked to the aqueduct della Ginevra, which already provided irrigation for the Boboli garden and allowed for the installation of fountains and ponds.

Having become the garden of the Medici, the masters of Florence, this garden was also to reflect their status and everything was done to this end.

In addition to the grottoes and fountains, an open-air amphitheatre was built with a red sandstone obelisk from Aswan dating from the time of pharaoh Ramses II.

Neptune's fountain This sumptuous venue was adorned with several statues, including those of Vincenzo de' Rossi, Giambologna, Ammannati, Paolo Fancelli, Cioli, Stoldo Lorenzi, Caccini and Nacherino, among others.

It was a far cry from the vegetable garden and vineyards of the early 16th century, thanks to the Medici, who bequeathed us this marvellous garden.

Here you can enjoy the serenity and magnificence, as well as the privacy it offers.

And that's not all! From some of the walkways, you can admire a breathtaking view of Florence, with the majestic Palazzo Vecchio and the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore as a backdrop.
